General Information on Belgium

The Country: Belgium is a small country (11,730 square miles, about the size of Maryland) with a population of slightly less than 10 million. It has been a constitutional monarchy since 1830. There are three languages (Dutch, French and German). However, English is widely spoken. The three regions of Flanders, Wallonia and Brussels have self-government in many spheres. Belgium has retained its old-world charm in the preservation of its ancient buildings and historical traditions. 

Climate: Belgium enjoys a temperate maritime climate. It is seldom very hot or extremely cold. Average temperatures vary from 54 degrees F to 72 degrees F in summer, 32 degrees F to 43 degrees F in winter.

Time: Six hours ahead of U.S. Eastern Standard Time.

Passports and Visas: Requirements for U.S. and Canadian citizens: valid passports without visa, provided their stay does not exceed 90 days. For nationals of other countries, consult the Belgium Consulate in your area.

Pets, cats and dogs: A veterinarian's certificate is needed, issued not less than 30 days or more than one year prior to entry, certifying that the animal is in good health and has been vaccinated against rabies within one year. Special forms are available at the nearest Belgium Consulate.

Currency:No restrictions on the transfer of funds into or out of Belgium.

Airport: Brussels Airport is connected by frequent trains to the center of town. The ride takes 17 minutes and trains are available every 20 minutes.

Traveling by Car: Rules of the Road: There is a speed limit of 90 km p.h. (about 56 miles per hour) on all roads throughout the country, with the exception of motorways and trunk roads with four traffic lanes, where the speed is limited to 120 km p.h. In most main towns, the speed limit is 60 km p.h. (about 37 miles per hour), as indicated by the traffic signs. Traffic of the right has right of way. Safety belts must be worn at all times and children under 12 are prohibited from sitting in the front seat, unless no other seat is available. While driving through the country, you'll find that the names of most cities and towns are listed two ways: in French and in Dutch. In cast of automobile accidents and breakdowns, drivers will find orange telephones to help you get assistance. Dial 100 for medical help.

Taxis, Parking and Car Rentals: Most cities and towns have parking meters. Taxis are available in most towns, The tip is included in the price shown on the meter. To rent a car, the driver must have a valid license and be at least 23 years of age. 

Useful Information:

Electricity: Current is A.C. 220 volts, 50 cycles. Luggage Lockers: These lockers are available in most train stations and other locations in large towns. If you wish to leave your luggage for more than a few days, it is advisable to do so at a baggage check room in the station.

Postal Service: Hours: 9:00am-12:00noon; 2:00pm-5:00pm.

Bank Service: Monday through Friday from 9:00am-3:00pm. Some close for an hour at lunch time.

Tips and V.A.T.: In Belgium, prices are quoted as "all-inclusive." No additional tipping is necessary.

Shopping: Department stores are open from 9:00am-6:00pm. Some of them close between 12:00noon- 2:00pm but remain open in the evenings until 8:00pm. In many towns, stores stay open until 9:00pm one evening a week, usually on Fridays. In Brussels, there is also a flea market open daily. The antiques market at the Place du Sablon is open on weekends. Antwerp offers a bird market on Sundays and in Liege, the street market is located at the Quai de la Batte.
