| Lisbon may be small compared to many European
capital cities, but it is also one of the most popular. Visitors flock
here to see such famous sites as St. George’s Castle, set up on one of
the city’s highest hills, and the Alfama, a district of narrow, twisted
streets and houses on the slopes leading up to it. They also come to relax
in Edward VII Park and observe the treasures at the Art Center of the Gulbenkian
Foundation, which includes works by such masters as Rembrandt and Rubens.
Those who appreciate late Gothic architecture (known as Manueline) journey
to the Belém section of the city to view the Mosteiro dos Jerónimos
and the Tower of Belém.
But there is more to Lisbon than the attractions listed in guidebooks. One of the true charms of Portugal’s capital is how the city’s natural beauty is enhanced by those things manmade. The city, spread out over a series of hills on the north back of the River Tagus, features wide boulevards bordered by black-and-white mosaic sidewalks, while its pastel-colored modern apartment buildings vie for attention with art nouveau houses and buildings faced with decorative tiles. It is hard for some visitors to know where to look first, but the savvy travelers have no trouble deciding where to stay for top value and comfort: a Barclay International Group apartment! |
