Description: Yearle Mill is an 18th century, 3 storey free-standing detached corn mill, 1 mile outside Wooler in the foothills of the Cheviots and on the edge of the Northumbria National Park. A mill has stood on the same site since at least the 12th century. In 1313, during the Scottish wars, a timber predecessor was razed to the ground by a raiding party of Scots. Formerly owned by the Earls of Tankerville, at the close of the 19th century, over eight centuries of continuous flour production. The mill came to an end and the wheels fell silent. The present building incorporates the original two-storey stone mill at the heart of an imposing structure which includes corn drying kiln, the wheel house,(still with water wheel) and unloading bay. The conversion, which has transformed this former symbol of agrarian revolution into a most spacious and comfortable accommodation, has retained many of the original mill features. The retention of the milling stones, applewood mill cogs and mill gearing will delight in its quirkiness. Nearby stands the miller's house with its own entrance and separate drive. Parents of young children should note the adjacent mill stream and close proximity of the river 'Wooler Water', lying only 50 yards from the property. As to be expected in a period property of some character, the stairs are steeper than normal with some open treads, and a number of rooms have relatively low beamed ceilings. The mill stands in its own grounds, not all of which are enclosed. The mill lies at the heart of an excellent selection of graded walks and cycle routes: it lies on the National Cycle Network and adjacent to Saint Cuthbert's Way. The market town of Wooler is well served with shops and a surprising number of pubs and hotels. Within half hour's drive lie Berwick and its Elizabethan fortifications, Alnwick, with its majestic castle and new water gardens, and a stunning coastline of broad sandy beaches and rugged cliffscapes including the holy island of Lindisfarne, with its priory and castle by Lutyens. Newcastle/Gateshead with its famous Metro shopping centre, (47 miles) and Edinburgh (70 miles) lie within easy reach.Accommodation: Ground floor: Entrance with cloakroom, opening into spacious dining room with adjoining kitchen, First floor: single bedroom with 3' bed, twin bedroom with 3' beds, double bedroom with 5' bed, shower room with WC, bathroom with WC, exercise room.
